The Islander was a dredge (somewhat similar to the Munson) whose working life came to an end in the early part of the 20th century. As with many other vessels of her era, she was left in Kingston harbour until the late 1930's when she, along with others were striped and taken out into Lake Ontario to be scuttled. She was first discovered by local divers in the 1980's, but lacking the ability to precisely locate her, she was lost again. On May 19th 2003, GLUE dive club members were running side scan sonar and rediscovered her. Above is a screen shot from the sonar unit on that day; on the lower side of the scan, you can see the stabilizer leg which was subsequently photographed in the picture on the bottom left below. The Islander is an interesting dive because despite being striped, she retains what today are interesting artifacts, including some of her slate ballast. There is some penetration possible and parts of her dredging structures are still intact.
