GUE Technical Diver Level II

The Technical Level II course both reviews and refines skills learned in Tech I, but continues to challenge the student by introducing new failures and procedures during the descent, diving, and decompression phases of technical diving. This robust course extends the divers depth capability by introducing the use of multiple stages as well as the use of trimix (greater percentages of Helium). The curriculum is designed to transform single stage technical divers into multi stage technical divers, while introducing them to the demanding world that lies below 150fsw/45m and beyond. Course participants will gain experience working with a variety of standard gas mixtures for use as bottom mix and multiple decompression gases. This information culminates in a true understanding of “best gas” selection in the 10 fsw to 240 fsw range.

Long-range dives can be very demanding, greatly exceeding no-decompression limits. As a result gas management, oxygen management and decompression obligation all become critical aspects to dive planning. Topics addressed in this course will build upon previously learned skills with an emphasis on staging, dive planning, accelerated decompression and technical equipment configurations. Practical sessions will involve a minimum of eight dives while using double tanks. At least four of these dives will be conducted with Trimix. Participants must consult NTD regarding their level of experience to establish their preparedness for this advanced curriculum.

Prerequisites

  • Must meet GUE General Course Prerequisites
  • Minimum age of 18
  • Must be GUE Tech I certified
  • Must have a minimum of 200 logged dives, with at least 50 dives on double tanks/cylinders; 25 of these should have utilized a single stage. Training dives are not included in these totals.
  • Must have a minimum of 25 logged dives beyond Tech I certification
  • All participants must be able to swim at least 400 yards/365m in less than 12 min without stopping
  • All participants must be able to swim a distance of at least 60'/18m on a breath hold

Duration

The GUE Technical Level 2 class is structured around a minimum 40-hour five-day session consisting of at least eight dives

Course Content

The Tech II course is normally conducted over a 5-day period and cumulatively involves a minimum of 40 hours of instruction, designed to instill divers with a working knowledge of extended range diving; this includes history, physics, physiology, tables and logistics.Special emphasis will be placed on extended exposures and their associated consideration (DCS, Oxygen toxicity and thermal concers).

Course requirements include a minumum of six(6) hours of academics and eight(8) dives four(4) of which will be critical skill dives and four (4) will be experience dives, Four (4) dives must utilize Helium. GUE representatives may structure this time im many different formats. Initial dives are to be done in shallow water to test the diver's ability and fill in any deficits in skill level.

Program Limits

  1. All dives are to maintain a working PO2 of no greater than 1.4 and a resting PO2 of 1.6 or less
  2. No dives are to exceed an equivalent narcotic depth of 100'
  3. Instructor to student ratio is not to exceed 3:1 during any in-water training
  4. Maximum depth 240'/70m
  5. No overhead environment diving
  6. No goal-oriented dives

Certification Agency

Global Underwater Explorers

Course Cost

Student Course Fee is $1250.00 USD + GST

Note: Deposits must be paid to the Course Coordinator at registration of the course. A minimum of 50% deposit is required. Cancellations less than 1 month prior to course start date will forfeit 1/2 of the deposit. If a replacement is found the deposit will be refunded in full.

Additional Costs

  • GUE Fundamentals of Better Diving Text: $34.95 CAD (available at your local GUE dealer, or through NTD)
  • GUE's Getting Clear on the Basics: The Fundamentals of Technical Diving. Available online at www.gue.com for about $15.00
  • GUE Registration Fee - $30.00 USD includes 'C' card

Other Student Expenses:
  • Nitrox/triox/trimix fills
  • Tank rentals
  • Boat fees, etc., as applicable.

Participants should recognize that discounted training is typically inferior and hence not a good value.

Equipment Requirements

Each student shoud have and be familiar with all of the following required equimpent:
  1. Tanks/Cylinders: Students are required to use dual tanks/cylinders connected with a dual outlet isolator manifold, which allows for the use of two first stages. All dives must start with a minimum of 80 cubic feet/2250 liters. Also required are two decompression cylinders: one grater than 30 cubic feet/850 liters for Nitrox and one 30 cubic foot/850 liter, or greater, for and additional deco gas.
  2. Regulators: Two first-stages, each supplying a single second-stage. One of the second stages must be on a 7 foot/2 meter hose. One of the first stages must supply a pressure gauge and provide inflation for a dry suit where applicable). One first stage regulator for shallow decompression gas and one first stage regulator for travel/decompression gas; each one is to supply a single second-stage and a single pressure gauge.
  3. Buoyancy Compensators: Back-mounted wings, mated with a harness and a back plate.
  4. Survey compass
  5. Two time keeping devices
  6. At least one depth-measuring device
  7. Decompression tables
  8. Mask and fins (fins must be of the non-split variety)
  9. At least one cutting device
  10. Underwater slate or Wet Notes
  11. One reel/spool, with 100 feet/30 meters of line per diver
  12. One primary reel per team, with a minumum of 300 feet/90 meters of line
  13. Three lights: one primary and two secondary
  14. At least one surface marker buoy per diver
  15. Exposure suit appropriate for the duration of exposure
