Dive Master - Supervisor

The Dive Master (Supervisor) course has been developed to provide leadership training for qualified divers who wish to serve the dive community as a dive guide and/or safety director.

The following information is based on current industry standards. All Dive Master/Supervisors and current candidates should please keep in mind that these qualifications are a summary listing and provide the minimum acceptable performance criteria. As with any rating requirements or any ongoing performance, once certified to any level, it is always expected and encouraged that the individual goes beyond expectations. Remember that the greater the dive leader's input, the greater the success in carrying out the tasks which are ahead.

Prerequisits

Prior to the commencement of training the Dive Master/Supervisor candidate will have the following:
  • Hold an Advanced Open Water Rating from a recognized training agency or equivalent.
  • Have a current medical examination and approval for diving by a licensed physician.
  • Rescue Diver or equivalent certification
  • Have completed and logged a minimum of forty (40) open water dives. Training dives do count toward this total.
There are some further qualifications that the prospective candidate needs to achieve prior to certification such as:
  • Be a minimum of twenty one (21) years of age.
  • Have completed a physical conditioning and watermanship evaluation.
  • Have the ability to demonstrate Dive Supervisor SCUBA skills.
  • Have CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Have the ability to solve in-water and out-of-water problems.
Have completed and passed a written exam on:

  • Physics of diving
  • Physiology of diving
  • Dive tables
  • Diving equipment
  • Accident management
  • Group control
  • Dive planning
Demonstrate ability in:
  • Dive Planning
  • Control of Diving Activities
  • Dive Accident Management

Duration

The Divemaster/Supervisor course is a very intensive and time consuming. The candidate can expect to spend two evenings a week for approximately three months plus the associated work with Open Water divers and requisite assistance during Open Water training. Normally the program will take six months to complete. Due to the nature of this course having to fit a number of schedules a personal time table will be drawn up between candidate and instructor to suit individual needs.

Please note that the above course fee does not include incidentals such as additional equipment that the candidate may need to purchase such as slates, surface markers, etc.

Equipment Requirements

Complete personal OW dive equipment and other such equipment as deemed necessary to effectively funtion as a Dive Master/Supervisor.

Note: All participants are responsible for providing all equipment or for making provisions to acquire equipment before the commencement of training.
